W-11: GRASS GIS and RDBMS

The benefits of using external RDBMS instead of internal GRASS DBF format will be highlighted.

A brief account of the installation steps for the main FOSS RDBMS will be presented, including the necessary prerequirements to install the different softwares. The outline of the configuration of external RDBMS to use as attribute-storage will follow, including a spatially enabled RDBMS (PostGIS). It will be shown how to share attibute and spatial data between GRASS and other applications. A hands-on tutorial will give the possibiliy to the participants to test:

  • connecting GRASS maps to external RDBMS;
  • reading and writing from/to such RDBMS;
  • importing and exporting spatial data from/to PostGIS.

Hints for practical usage of external RDBMS will be given.
