GDAL/OGR Project Status Report

Project developers report on the status of GDAL/OGR project.
The report includes a review of user visible new features in the last couple of years, including new drivers, new core capabilities described via RFCs and progress in areas of focus such as thread safety and wide character support.
Organizational status of the project is reviewed, including an active developer roster, incubation within OSGeo, role of the paid maintainer, role of the PSC, sponsorship, use of buildbot, use of Trac and use of the Wiki. An attempt is made to establish project health, and areas in need of improvement.
Finally, likely future development directions are summarized.
