Geopole.org: Integrating Mashups and Open Source Web-GIS

Presentation | Presented

  • Pirmin Kalberer, Sourcepole AG

The geopole.org platform allows users without programming skills to create map mashups. User layers can be published on top of Google Maps, Yahoo! Maps, etc. or be entirely based on local GIS data. Users can import their locations from a spreadsheet into a automatically customized DB table and update it with a slick browser interface. The resulting map layers can be published as WMS, WFS or KML service.

The presentation describes the architecture and performance considerations of this web-based mapping system developed using the following open-source components:
* Ruby on Rails: Application framework
* PostgreSQL/PostGIS: User data storage
* UMN Mapserver: Local map generation
* OpenLayers: Map viewer
