First release of improved raster support based on SUN’s JAI and ImageIO libraries has been contributed to GeoTools by GeoSolutions S.A.S. since the 2.3.0 version. This contribution has been also integrated into GeoServer since the 1.5.0 release, resulting in brand new raster support for the preexistent WMS service as well as a novel WCS service.
This presentation will provide a summary of what has been achieved during the above mentioned effort while at the same it will provide an insight of the ongoing and future development paths that GeoSolutions is currently pursuing in cooperation with the GeoServer and GeoTools project management committees.
Efforts for next generation of improved raster support are focusing in mainly three directions.
First direction will lead to the integration of the GDAL framework, through its Java SWIG bindings, with the ImageIO and JAI frameworks. This will allow to easily integrate a wide number of new raster sources into GeoTools and GeoServer with a moderate effort.
Second direction will lead to the management of multidimensional, spatiotemporal and multispectral, raster sources in order to allow support for time and depth/elevation parameters for WMS and WCS services. It is worth to point out that the main objective of this work is the support for the integration and exploitation of remote sensing multispectral data together with meteorologic and oceanographic models’ output.
Last direction will lead to new classification techniques for supporting of on-the-fly classification of raster data. Objective of this effort is the support of WMS RasterSymbolizer for unrendered data.
